about

i love music. so should you.

this is my (mostly) music blog. i wanted a space where i could wax poetically about all the bands and artists i love. (my heart and my cd collection is v. v. big.) you'll also find a smattering of writing related things, since that's what i'm doing these days, along with other pop culture miscellanea.

things you need to know: i live in chicago, but i used to live in new york city. i go to a lot of shows. i stopped being ashamed of my musical tastes a long time ago. the first time i heard "eleanor rigby" by the beatles, i was nine years old and i still get goosebumps when i hear those opening strings. i sing - trained in opera, musical theater, and everything in between.

i'm not very country, i'm mostly rock and roll.

I am doing what I want, but one of the interesting things about the Internet when you’re a musician is the sociology of the fans, the psychology of being a fan, and observing this negative and positively weird behavior. It’s kind of hard to explain this, but there’s this weird illness with people where it’s almost like they view their [favorite] artist as a football team or something, and all other artists are another team. [Laughs.] Or even sometimes, your records become sports teams. You put out a new record, and it’s like, “Tonight at Dodger Stadium, it’s the Easy Tigers vs. the Heartbreakers.” It’s super-competitive, and it’s a highly judgmental place for a place that should be free of judgment. My feeling about music is that it’s a place to go to get away from fucking negative creeps. And now, what’s really weird is that music is full of negative fucking creeps.

the horrible crowes - “teenage dream” (cover)

okay, there’s pretty much nothing that brian fallon can do wrong.  i haven’t posted here about elsie, because i want to really dig into it and listen a few more times.  but this cover is just…kind of dark and gives this song a wistful weight that i really like. in fact, this might need to go on the playlist for the story i’m currently writing.

“are we the waiting” - stark sands and the cast of american idiot (aol session)

And I never was smart with love…
I let the bad ones in and the good ones go, but
I wanna love you like I’ve never been hurt before.

pearl jam - “betterman”

i’ve been on a nostalgia kick lately - my birthday always seems to inspire that - and recently i found a sheet of notebook paper tucked inside a book that came with me from reno to new york to chicago.  it had a playlist on it called “spring/summer 1995” and this was the first track on it.

the album this comes from, vitalogy, along with nirvana’s mtv unplugged (which i seem to have lost), alanis morisette’s jagged little pill, nine inch nail’s the downward spiral, smashing pumpkins’ mellon collie and the infinite sadness and the beatles’ white album were my rotating soundtrack that year.  any time i hear those songs - all of which i still listen to on a regular basis - i’m immediately sent back to my sophomore year of high school.  that was a good year, maybe one of the best.

i’m still determined to cover this song one day, because i love it and because it means a lot to me.
